I LOVE discussing hair.
My family is very hair centric (mom, twin sister, little sister- between us we have enough hair to make a lion mane jealous), a trait I wish to pass down to my future twin baby girls...you know, when I eventually have them. Many years from now. In the future. The distant future. Husband grew up in a family of all boys, so I "tease" him about having twins, or as I usually say: TwinBabyGirls!!! He just loves it (read: develops hives).
But hair care is no matter to take lightly! Had I been more properly schooled on the topic as a tween I would not have made the nightmarish and uproariously ill-advised decision to shear off what I believed to be an insufferably frizzy mess of thick blonde hair into the "half step better than a bowl cut" man-style that I sported with varying degrees of fashion success throughout most of my adolescence. Don't be fooled into thinking I'm just being self-deprecating- this happened about 5 years before the Pixie Cut gained popularity when boy-short hair meant either you had just delivered your third child and were surrendering your feminity in exchange for relaxed fit pleated jeans and celibacy, or you were moonlighting as a Drag King. A notably odd style choice for a high school freshman. Short hairstyles have come a long way since then.
During that ill-fated cut, as the first chunk of hair fell fatally to the floor of the salon, and what was left sprung up in a perfect bouncy spiral, I realized- a moment too late!- that my hair was not an insufferably frizzy mess, but was, instead, curly. I just needed some gel! For the love of hairdos man, WHY! For the next 6 to 8 years I lived in constant fear that one day I would flip open the pages of a Style magazine and see my image spackled firmly under the "Don't" section with a little black bar over my eyes...you know, to protect my identity. Not that it would do much good as surely I was the only 16 year-old girl on the planet with a Billy Idol cut. The jig would be up.
But that was many many years ago and I've since grown things out a bit. And the other day Good Friend Julia- you know the one who owns the neverending pooping dog- gave me a rocking hair cut with cutsey little bangs that I LOVE. Check it out:
What am I looking at? |
And...
I just love the little bang-ettes! |

Allison, I'm sure I have a picture of that haircut somewhere....let me know if you want me to scan it and put it on your blog and Facebook :)
great cut. super cute. you know i secretly hate you for having julia there all to your self. hate.
Question: This is really for both you and Ashley. How do you do curly hair??? I have a small munchkin who wakes up looking like the love child of Einstein and Shirley Temple. I, clearly, do not have curly hairs. Husband, also clearly, doesn't know the meaning of "hair product." I do her hair in the morning but after nap time its' back to bozo/Kramer. What should I do!? (hehe this sounds a bit "Dear Abbyish.")
Halee- yes please. I love ridicule.
Holly- hahahha. I got Juuuulia! :) There is a guest room here with your name on it if you want to borrow her though!
Emily- First let me say that sweet Sesame's curls are a much different shape than mine, and perhaps Natalie Mader would have a better solution as she is the only white girl I know to have curls like that. BUT that being said, I have the best luck with gel (as opposed to mouse or pomade or styling creme) because the gel kind of keeps everything held together. I use Aquage styling gel, but that may be a bit expensive for a toddler. Maybe use the Got2Be blue gel- I used to use that and you can get it anywhere. Use about a quarter size and scrunch it in, then (if you blow dry) try to use a diffuser, and dry it when the hair is almost starting to dry naturally, but before it sets (otherwise you'll get crispy curls). Hope that helps!
CUTE!!!
(the captcha text beneath this comment says "flocksuc". Really? I have to type "flocksuc" to show that I'm human?)
This made me laugh out loud. Love the new hair! And like Halee, I'm sure I could find some documentation of your adolescent hair. If only I could find it...
Amy- I think writing "flocksuc" is a fantastic way to show you are human. In fact, the government should make that one of the official tests in the unlikely event of cyborg invasion.
Sara- Thanks! Perhaps while you are looking for pictures of my tragic hair phase, you can pull out some statuettes and a the video from S&A Dancers. If I'm going to be mocked, I would like it to be thorough.
My gosh, you're adorable!
(I found you from the DoCo. So far I love your site! And how have you not managed to gain weight in Germany?! I was there for 2 weeks and gained 5 pounds!)
Thanks Ange (for the delightful compliment and for reading my blog)! You know, I have no explanation for the lack of weight gain. I'm chalking it up to the fact that my unemployed lifestyle is so dull that the fat cells have jumped ship out of boredom.
